| Jeff Sykes achieved what he wanted to with the Mould 20 Ultimate -- a very rowable fast hull -- but many folks were not comfortable with its unconventional profile and how it trims through the water. For those folks, Jeff modified the mould to put more volume in the last 1.5 metres of the stern, which adds some drag but does help the boat trim more evenly. This became the Mould 26 Ultimate II. Some folks do feel that it handles crosswind and choppy conditions better than the Ultimate I. | |||||||

| New Financing for Boat Purchases | ||
| We now offer traditional financing through Prosper.com. While we will fund the loans to our customers, we use Prosper.com to get customers the best rates we think possible, to increase the amount of funding we can get to finance loans, and to save ourselves time on billing and make sure customers are timely with their payments. How it works: |
||
| 1. After we determine that the funding is available, you pay a minimum 30% down payment to Sykes NA. This reserves your order as well as starts the loan process. | ||
| 2. You sign up as a borrower at Prosper.com. This will require either your personal SSN or your club's tax ID number. Based on your credit ranking, you will be charged a closing cost of 1%, 2%, or 3%; the better your rating, the lower the closing costs. | ||
| 3. We'll help you fill out the form describing the purpose of the loan, if you need it. Once it lists, we'll fund 100% of the loan at the existing interest rate (9.75% in Feb 2008). For the following 10 days, other lenders have a chance to bid on your loan and bring down the interest rate. | ||
| 4. After the loan closes, you'll be billed monthly by EFT to repay the loan. With Prosper, it's a three-year loan, but there is no penalty for prepayment. | ||
| Note: If Sykes NA has to reclaim a boat, you may lose all or a portion of the principle that you paid. | ||

| During his consulting work with Sykes Racing in the 1990s, Leo Wolloner designed a men's heavyweight single in the theme of the traditional Empacher single. The Mould 26 Euro single is slightly wider than the Mould 26 Ultimate II and has a slight flattening along the bottom to give it more roll stability. It is still an elite racing hull shape, and has been used by top rowers at the Head of the Charles, but the boat does have slightly more drag than the Ultimate II single. | |||||||

| After the inclusion of the lightweight events in the 1996 Olympic Games, the Australian Institute of Sport asked Sykes to develop an elite lightweight double for women. What Jeff came up with was a very narrow and aggressive shape with minimum wetted surface and very little wave creation. It was used with great success in 2002 and 2003, where the AUS LW2x came 2nd and 1st in the World Championships. (Note: the aggressive narrowness of the hull does not lend itself to pair conversion rigging.) | |||||||

| The mould 13 Olympic family of moulds has been used in more Olympic and World Championship medal-winning performances than any other Sykes hull, including medals won by American Olympic crews. Based originally on the FISA shape, it has seen several improvements over the years and is now the most respected hull among the elite rowers in Australia. The shape has been used by crews winning either gold or silver in the last four Olympic Games: 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004. | |||||||

| The mould 9 FISA family of hull shapes (AKA moulds 9, 22, & 24) are based on the design produced by Klaus Filter for FISA. Jeff Sykes primarily smoothed out some of the lines on the hull, mostly above the water line. Rowers find the hulls easy to sit even though the hull has a near semi-circular cross-section. The Mould 9 has been raced to championship performances at the US Youth Invite, Royal Canadian Henley, USRowing Elite Nationals, and the World Masters Chamionships by US and Canadian crews. At the elite level, Australian and North American crews have one several World Championships in Mould 9. | |||||||||||

| During his consulting work with Sykes Racing in the 1990s, Jeff Sykes asked Klaus Filter to look at the Mould 1 Ultimate and consider some changes that could be made. The Ultimate II adds a little to the width of the beam, which is particularly intended for heavier crew. It also has more depth in the ends to make the boat trim more evenly than the Ultimate I. The Ultimate II is the most common 8+ that we have ordered in North America. | ||||||||||

| The most popular heavyweight and successful coxed-four in Australia, the Mould 7 Euro was raced by the Australian men's team to several first-place finishes, including the Lucerne. It's called the Euro because the camber and shape is roughly similar to that of the traditional Empacher, but is more narrower and has reduced wetted surface. Crews will not find it harder to sit. | ||||||||||

| At first glance, many rowers would think the mould 1 Ultimate 8+ would be difficult to row given the aggressive shape, but decades of use has proven that it is indeed a fun boat to row. Contemporary observers who are used to a more abrupt bow might find the fine bow and stern disconcerting, but recent testing has shown that the boat handles well and runs very nicely at higher speed, arguably better than those boats with more abrupt bows. | |||||||

| When Jeff Sykes and Matt Dingle sat down to design the Mould 20, they emphasised minimum drag above all else. The Mould 20 Ultimate has a semi-circular cross-section, and carries that section deep into the stern, which makes for a very fine stern and a recognisable 'rocker' along the length of the hull. This does mean that the bow can ride higher out of the water at the catch, causing no loss in performance, but may make it harder to handle in cross winds and cross wakes. | |||||||

Boat Trials & Rent-to-Own Programme |
||
|
We have two options for customers looking to trial a Sykes, not including any arrangements you might make with a customer in your neighbourhood. (If you have such an opportunity, we pay customers between $50 and $400 if they loan their boat to someone who buys a Sykes as a result.) The first option to trial a Sykes is a two-week trial of any boat that we have in stock. The trial is designed to give folks more than a couple days to determine if they are interested in buying a Sykes. A 10% (minimum of $1,000) deposit on the boat is required as both earnest payment and as bond against any damage that may occur. Our insurance policy covers damage beyond $1,000 during the trial. The second option is our rent-to-own option: The customer rents the boat for about three months (see RTO rental rate table) as well as puts a 10% deposit/bond on the boat (minimum of $1,000). If the customer decides to buy the boat, 100% of the bond and rental payments go toward the purchase price of the boat. This is ideal for customers further afield or interested in trying larger boats among several rowers over a longer term. What's more, if the customer likes the RTO boat, but wants to order a custom-made boat, 50% of the rent paid on the trial boat is applied toward the purchase of the different boat. Moreover, there may be the ability to continue renting the existing boat until the new one arrives. |

| For the 40th Anniversary, Managing Director Jeff Lawrence contracted with Dr. Matt Dingle and his team of material and fluid-dynamics scientists to develop a new era of Sykes hull shapes. They first did extensive computer modeling on several of the top hulls in the world. They then set the parameters for crew weight and competitive speed to generate a shape that would have the least drag for the crews we see as our biggest market. In the case of the M40L, that's junior girls. In the case of the M40M, that's junior guys and collegiate women. In its first season of racing in Australia ('07), the crews won every regatta in which they entered. | |||||||
